Sampson Community College aims to seek out the most talented employees as possible when recruiting for the college—even if they come from 1200 miles away. Jennifer Williams is no exception. A native of Jamaica, Jennifer has joined the SCC team as a Spanish instructor.

“I am originally from Jamaica and I speak Jamaican Creole, Spanish and English,” says Williams. “I joined the team here at Sampson Community College to teach the Spanish Interpreter program because that is something I enjoy and something that can be a valuable asset for students.”

Jamaica is an island country of the West Indies. It is the third largest island in the Caribbean Sea, after Cuba and Hispaniola. Jamaica is about 146 miles long and is situated some 100 miles west of Haiti. Williams is aware of Sampson’s diverse community and says this is a perfect area to be teaching this course.

“I have just joined the team, but I have already enjoyed my time here at SCC,” she adds. “This is a wonderful place to work. People here are kind and hard working I have noticed. I have seen instructors here make serious contributions to the student population here in various ways and I hope I can make similar contributions as well.”

The Community Spanish Interpreter curriculum prepares individuals to work as entry-level bilingual professionals who will provide communication access in interview and interactive settings. In addition, this curriculum provides educational training for working professionals who want to acquire Spanish language skills.

Graduates of the program will qualify for entry-level jobs as paraprofessional bilingual employees in educational systems or a variety of community settings. Individuals may choose from part-time, full-time, or self-employment/free-lance positions, or apply language skills to other human service related areas.
