(CLINTON, N.C) – Dawson McLamb graduated from Midway High School in 2018 with both his high school diploma and an Associate in General Education degree from Sampson Community College (SCC). He was able to earn his Associate degree through the Career and College Promise (CCP) program at SCC. After graduating from both Midway High School and SCC, Dawson went on to attended Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC). While there, he received a two-year degree in Fire Protection Technology. Dawson now has a Bachelor’s degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration from Fayetteville State University (FSU).

Dawson graduated from Fayetteville State this summer and is now working as a full-time 911 dispatcher in Sampson County. It has only been two years since Dawson graduated from high school and he also already earned a Bachelor’s degree. Dawson was able to speed up his education and career with the help of SCC.

The CCP program at SCC was able to help Dawson on his path to earning his Associate degree while still in high school. Through the CCP program, students can take SCC classes both online and face-to-face. High school students can use these classes to earn college credit and college experience. The CCP program at SCC allows students to begin both their educational and career pathways.

When asked about his experience with the CCP program, Dawson shared, “I think it’s a great program. It really allows for some students to go ahead and get a head start on their college degree while still being able to enjoy all the fun activities of high school.”

In his free time, Dawson takes part with the Herring Volunteer Fire Department and Clement Rescue. This volunteer work that Dawson participate in correlates very well with his degrees.

Dawson was one among seven CCP students who graduated with both their high school diploma and an Associate degree in 2018. The year 2018 was the first time that any CCP student had graduated with the degree.  In order to receive both your high school diploma and an Associate degree while still in high school, a student must be determined and ready for the challenge. Dawson did not fail to reach his goals and face the challenges.

Director of Career and College Promise, Perry Gillespie shared, “Dawson was a pleasure to work with at MHS. He was polite and hard-working which is always great qualities to have. I am not surprised he is doing well. He was an all-around great student.”

Dawson McLamb has a very bright future ahead of him in the Emergency Management field. He hopes to become a full-time firefighter. Dawson has had a short, but plentiful education starting here at Sampson Community College.
