[Clinton, N.C.] – As Sampson Community College’s (SCC) Spring 2024 commencement continues to approach, the College looks to highlight graduating Foundation scholars—students who have received one or more scholarships from the SCC Foundation. One of those individuals is Amanda Darnell, an Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) student who recently received the Carlton & Lynelle Martin Scholarship for 2023-24.

A 2006 graduate of Dos Palos High School in California, Darnell returned to school to obtain her ADN from SCC in 2023. Having previously earned her CNA and LPN licenses, her decision to enroll was influenced by the praises of a fellow co-worker, who was also a current student in the nursing program at SCC.

Darnell explained, “I heard nothing but wonderful things about the nursing program. That the nursing program was held to a high standard. I heard about the school from a co-worker who is also graduating with myself.  When I first started, I was completely overwhelmed but the staff was amazing. The campus is so calm and soothing now.”

Currently employed as a full-time LPN at Cape Fear Valley Regional Medical Center, Darnell has worked in the healthcare field for almost 20 years— serving as both a CNA and LPN for nine years each. In addition to the ADN program and full-time work, she is also a wife and mom to two boys, Bryson and Damien.

“My boys my greatest accomplishments,” Darnell remarked. “Even though I have been absent a lot this past year I hope they can see that hard work and determination pays off. I would like to thank my husband, Daniel, for always being my biggest supporter and picking up where I leave off and making sure our two boys are well taken care of.”

When asked who’d she like to thank, Darnell also mentioned Megan Callahan, Nursing Instructor at SCC. In Darnell’s eyes, Callahan has continued to be a great support to all of her students in the program with her constant availability and true desire to see them succeed.

“A teacher I would recognize is Megan Callahan,” Darnell elaborated. “Even though she is a new instructor, she is very supportive of her students. She is always available for her students even when she is not technically on the clock. She always have a listening ear even when its issues outside the school curriculum.”

For the 2023-2024 academic year, Darnell was awarded the Carlton and Lynelle Martin Scholarship by the SCC Foundation. Voicing that she felt “honored” to be chosen for the award, it’s purpose since 2010 has been to assist deserving nursing students in their educational pursuits at SCC.

Darnell remarked about its impact, “I was able to attend the LPN to ADN Advanced Placement program without having to work extra shifts at work, which in turn would take away from my studying time. I truly felt honored that out of all the applicants I was chosen.”

Upon graduating from SCC in Spring 2024, Darnell plans to transfer to obtain her BSN. Looking back, she wholeheartedly recommends the College to other prospective students looking to further their nursing career. Specifically noting it’s easy navigation and helpful staff, Darnell wholeheartedly believes that the 40-minute drive to the College each day has been worth it.

“My experience in this program been a roller roaster, but I think that is just nursing in general,” she closed. “I have enjoyed my time here, we have become our own little family. SCC has taught me that it’s not the size of an establishment that matters, but the way the establishment makes you feel.”

Sampson CC very proud of Amanda for her accomplishments at the College thus far. The Foundation loves seeing the impact scholarships have on students and looks forward to seeing all she will continue to do throughout her education and healthcare career.

The deadline to apply for scholarships each year is April 15. Over 100 opportunities are available with just one application. Apply today at www.sampsoncc.edu/scholarships.
