Overview

The North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission mandates the Basic Law Enforcement Training curriculum.

Successful completion of the BLET program requires that the student satisfy the minimum requirements for certification by the Criminal Justice Commission including passing the POPAT course. Students satisfactorily completing this program should possess at least the minimum degree of general attributes, knowledge, and skills to function as a law enforcement officer.

Job opportunities are available with state, county, and municipal governments in North Carolina. In addition, knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in this course of study qualify one for job opportunities with private enterprises in such areas as industrial, and private security. The BLET curriculum includes a total of 640 hours minimum of instruction.

Course Content

Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate course work covers State commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to:

  • Alcoholic Beverage Laws
  • Physical Fitness Training
  • Firearms Training
  • Crime Prevention
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Detention Duties
  • Elements of Criminal Law
  • Ethics
  • Juvenile Law, Civil Process
  • Motor Vehicle Law
  • Patrol Duties
  • Testifying in Court
  • Traffic Enforcement

Requirements for Class Registration

  • Reading Comprehension Test (10th grade level)
  • Certified Copy High School Transcript or GED Transcript
  • Medical Forms (see packet)
  • Personal History Statement (see packet)
  • Proof of Citizenship-Birth Certificate or Naturalization Papers
  • Copy of NC Drivers License and Social Security Card
  • Certified Copy of NC Driving Record- ncdot.gov
  • Obtain Criminal Background Checks in each county in every state you have lived in from the age of 16 to present.
  • Copy of Military DD-214(if applicable)

Registration Information

  • Contact the BLET Director, Anthony Davis, to begin the registration process.
  • After speaking to the BLET Director, complete the entire packet to the right.

The BLET program teaches the basic fundamentals of police work– it will ensure you’ll learn the basics. The program prepares cadets as much as possible. SCC has a marvelous BLET program, and I enjoyed it to the fullest. I will always recommend SCC BLET program to other upcoming and interested cadets.
