[Clinton, N.C.]— Zatasia Crumpler is a former Cosmetology & Natural Hair Care graduate from Sampson Community College (SCC) who recently returned to earn her degree in Information Technology (IT)- Systems Security.
Graduating from Union High in 2014, Crumpler enrolled in SCC’s Cosmetology program immediately after high school. She eventually earned her Associate of Applied Science degree and the very first Natural Hair Care certification offered at the College. In 2023, Crumpler reapplied to SCC in the IT program, planning to graduate in Summer 2025 with her degree.
She said of her decision, “I chose to return to SCC because of the strong support system and welcoming environment it offers. I first came to SCC right out of high school in 2014, and I immediately felt at home here. The positive atmosphere and the friendly faces around campus made it an easy decision to come back. The staff and faculty have been incredibly supportive, and I appreciate how they’ve always been there when I needed help.”
When she first began the Cosmetology program, Crumpler started online during Spring II, since she was expecting. She recalled that her due date was near the end of the semester, and she completed coursework even on the day she gave birth. However, despite the challenges that arose, Crumpler stated that she persevered and remained devoted to her studies—a mindset she carries into her IT degree as well.
“When I first started at Sampson Community College, I began with online courses because I was pregnant and couldn’t attend in-person classes at the time,” she explained. “My due date was right before the semester ended, so I found myself doing schoolwork on the same day I gave birth. It was a bit challenging, especially since I enrolled in the second part of the spring semester, which meant I missed out on some of the material that everyone else learned earlier. But I didn’t let it stop me. I made sure to put in the extra effort to catch up and stay on track with my coursework.”
Reflecting on her time in the IT program, specifically, Crumpler voiced that it’s been both “challenging and rewarding” at the same time. With her new degree, she plans to begin a career in cybersecurity, working to help organizations protect their digital assets and sensitive information. She also hopes to earn certifications in areas like network security and cloud security, with a long-term goal of becoming a security analyst or network security engineer
Crumpler stated, “I’ve really enjoyed learning about different aspects of technology, particularly in the area of cybersecurity. While some of the material has been difficult, I appreciate how it helps me think critically and solve problems. The instructors are supportive and always willing to assist when I need help, which has made the learning process easier. As cybersecurity is an ever-growing field, I’m excited about the many opportunities it provides. I want to make the digital world a safer place and build a successful career in IT security.”
When asked who she’d like to thank, Crumpler noted the impact Ricky Tyree, Department Chair of IT, and Caroline Chestnutt, IT Instructor, have made on her educational journey— always giving encouragement and assistance wherever needed. She also expressed her gratitude to two individuals she holds near to her heart: Jeffery Crumpler Jr. and Jimmy Packer Jr.
She said of her instructors, “I am truly grateful for Mr. Tyree and Ms. Chestnutt, they have been the biggest help throughout my time at SCC. Mr. Tyree has always encouraged me to keep going, and whenever I didn’t understand something, he took the time to break it down for me in a way I could understand. Ms. Chestnutt has been a huge source of inspiration and support, especially with my schoolwork. I know I can always email her when I need assistance, and she’s always willing to guide me.”
“My uncle, Uncle Jeffery Crumpler Jr. has also been my biggest supporter,” Crumpler continued. “He has always encouraged me to keep going, especially when times get tough, and he has been there to help me whenever I needed it. His support and belief in me have played a big part in my decision to pursue my degree. I also want to thank Jimmy Packer Jr. for always pushing me to do my best. He has given me great advice and has encouraged me to never give up, no matter how difficult things get. His support has meant a lot to me, and I truly appreciate everything he’s done”
Looking back, Crumpler voiced that she would wholeheartedly recommend SCC as a “perfect fit” to other prospective students, due to its supportive and friendly environment, knowledgeable and helpful instructors, numerous resources, and affordability. Her journey has taught her to work hard and manage her time better, while also learning that it’s alright to ask for help when needed.
Ultimately, Crumpler is proud of her perseverance and determination to graduate and pursue another degree, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support of SCC’s faculty & staff who have “made a huge difference” in her life.
She closed, “The education and skills I’ve gained here have already helped me grow academically and personally. I know that the knowledge and connections I’m building at SCC will open doors for me in the future and help me achieve my career goals. Though it hasn’t always been easy to keep up with my schoolwork while balancing other things in my life, it has made me more responsible.”
“I will always be grateful for the support I received here, knowing I always had someone in my corner when I needed help, no matter the situation. Overall, the time and effort I’ve invested in my education here have been well worth it, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
Sampson CC is incredibly proud of Zatasia. The College admires her determination and perseverance throughout her collegiate journey, and looks forward to seeing all she will do within the field of Information Technology.
