[Clinton, N.C.] – Sampson Community College (SCC) currently serves as the N.C. Department of Insurance Delivery Agency for Sampson County encompassing Firefighter, Driver Operator, Aerial, and Technical Rescue Specialties. A former Fire Academy cadet, Rebecca Lee now serves with the Clinton Fire Department (CFD) after graduating from SCC in 2024.
Obtaining her high school diploma from Jubilee Christian Academy in 2017, Lee decided to enroll in SCC’s Fire Academy in December 2023 after hearing about it from Captain JD Blackmore of Clinton FD.
She explained, “I chose to pursue a career in public service because it’s a family tradition. I also like helping people, and I enjoy a challenge.”
Considering her experience in the program to be “great,” Lee recalled that her favorite part was the hands-on training and practicals they engaged in throughout. However, instructors such as Jim Demay, Dean of Public Safety Programs, and Clint Holland, Fire & Rescue instructor, she mentioned, also made the program both comprehensible and worthwhile.
Lee described, “Jim Demay was willing to help or answer any questions I had, and if he didn’t know the answer, he would find out and get back with me. Clint Holland was very knowledgeable and took his time with you if you didn’t quite understand the subject we were discussing.”
After graduating from SCC in February 2024 with her NC Firefighter certificate, Lee applied for a position at Clinton FD and was accepted. Now, her general workday consists of ensuring the safety and functionality of the trucks, keeping the station clean, training, assisting with meals, and preparing for the on-coming shift.
“Rebecca was a standout in her class,” voiced Demay. “She brought some experience from her volunteer time that proved helpful for her and her classmates. She was an excellent student, and we wish her the best during her fire career.”
In the future, Lee plans to continue serving in fire, with hopes of obtaining her instructor license one day. Through teaching, Lee hopes to help future firefighters “learn and understand” more about the career she holds near to her heart.
Looking back, Lee remarked that she would wholeheartedly recommend SCC’s Fire Academy to other prospective students. Not only was the coursework enjoyable, but it also helped prepare her for the successful career in public service she now has.
“My experience with SCC’s fire program was great,” Lee closed. “I believe attending the program was worth it- I learned a lot. It definitely helped me prepare more than what I already was. I would absolutely recommend SCC’s Fire program to other students.”
Students who complete the Fire Academy will receive certifications and training in the following: NC Firefighter Certification, TIMS, NC Hazmat Level 1 Responder, NC Fire Apparatus, Emergency Vehicle Driver, Rescue Intervention Team Training, Driver/Operator Pumps Operations, and CPR.
Graduates will be able to satisfy the successful completion of the manipulative and academic training requirements as established by Office of State Fire Marshal to be certified as a NC Firefighter.
Sampson CC extends its appreciation to Firefighter Lee for her service and commitment to ensuring the safety of our local community. The College is proud to have played a role in her fire service career and looks forward to seeing all she will continue to do with the Clinton Fire Department.
