For one student enrolled in Sampson Community College’s Networking Management program, success has come faster than the speed of a network router. Darien Knapp, who is set to graduate this summer with an AAS degree in Network Management, has accepted a position with Cisco, located in Research Triangle Park.

Cisco is a worldwide technology company best known for its computer networking products and once, was valued at $580 billion. Knapp has accepted a position with Cisco as a Network Lab Engineer. “This is awesome,” says Nathan McKee, Department Chair in the Computer Information Technology and Security department. “He was already set to graduate this summer and will be starting his new position in a few weeks while finishing his final courses online.”

Knapp (L), with instructor McKee, will graduate this summer from SCC.

Also known as computer network architects, engineers work with a company’s computer network, using information technology to make network systems for employees to use. These data networks can include local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), intranets and extranets. According to McKee, Darien worked hard during his time at SCC, volunteering extensively to help set up the new Computer Lab, served as a member of the 2019 SCC Cyber Security competition team, and has always been gracious to assist other students with IT related questions.

The Information Technology (IT) curriculum at SCC prepares graduates for employment in the technology sector as designers, testers, support technicians, system administrators, developers, or programmers who use computer software and\or hardware to design, process, implement and manage information systems in specialties such as database services, security, business intelligence, healthcare informatics and others depending on the technical path selected within the curriculum.

“This is something that all students can strive for,” adds McKee. “Hard work really does pay off and at this college, we certainly have the knowledge, the tools and the training to take you to the top of your game and Darien is proof of that.” To begin your career in networking, contact McKee at nmckee@sampsoncc.edu.
