At the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year, Sampson Community College (SCC) welcomed several new full-time and part-time faculty and staff members into their campus family. One of the recent hires was Lynn Freeman-Sankey, a previous adjunct instructor at SCC, who now works full-time in the College’s Education Department and leads the Teacher Licensure Preparation program.
Before coming to SCC, Freeman-Sankey graduated from Elon University with a Bachelor of Arts in History, earned her Teaching License from Fayetteville State University, and obtained her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University (GCU). Staying at GCU Online, she is currently studying towards her doctorate in Organizational Leadership— looking to graduate in 2023.
For over twenty-six years, Freeman-Sankey has taught in both the public and private school atmospheres. Working with 2nd grade through high school, she’s led in many educational aspects: serving as a bus driver, instructional assistant, teacher, student services coordinator, after-school director, curriculum specialist, and teacher advancement coordinator.
In 2016-2017, Freeman-Sankey was named Sandhills Teacher of the Year and a North Carolina Teacher of the Year finalist as well. She is currently a member of Governor Roy Cooper’s Teacher Advisory Committee and serves as secretary on the SCC Foundation Board. Freeman-Sankey also owns a small business, iNCredible Potential Tutoring Academy, local to Clinton, N.C.
When asked to name a fun fact about herself, Freeman-Sankey stated that she absolutely adores movie theater popcorn. So much so, that she’ll drive to theaters local and abroad just to purchase the snack.
She explained, “I love movie theater popcorn! I’ll go every weekend and buy a tub to go. When East Park Cinema was closed, I would drive to Fayetteville to get popcorn instead. For Christmas this year, my husband and son actually bought me my own popcorn machine.”
In addition to almost thirty years’ experience in the educational field, Freeman-Sankey believes that her experience as both a wife and mother, as well as her faith in God and his promises, has served as a guide to her during her time at SCC. Working as a part-time adjunct instructor in the Education Department over the last few years, Freeman-Sankey voiced that she is excited to transition to full-time and positively influence SCC and its students— especially future teachers.
She elaborated, “I am most excited about increasing the teacher pipeline to our classes with qualified and prepared teachers. Our students deserve effective instruction that leads to student achievement. My advice to current or future students would be that life is a learning experience. So as long as you are living, learn. Learn from others. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from your successes. Learn from life.”
Sampson CC proudly welcomes Lynn Freeman-Sankey as a new full-time faculty member in the College’s Education Department. SCC admires her love and dedication to both education and students, and knows she will continue to do great things to help them succeed.
