[CLINTON, N.C.] – Jose Balderas Mendoza’s love for animals began at a young age when he moved from the big city of Raleigh, North Carolina to the rural area of Sampson County. While attending Hobbton High School, his love for Animal Science continued to grow through taking agricultural classes. His love for animals led him to begin an educational route in hopes of becoming a Veterinarian. He began his education at Sampson Community College (SCC) while majoring in both Applied Animal Science Technology and Farm Business Management. After experiencing both the city and country life Jose had an entire new perspective on what he wanted his career goals to be and he knew he could start his education here at SCC.

After graduating from high school in 2018 Jose did not have going to college in his plans, but after taking a year off he decided to attend SCC. Since attending SCC, Jose believes that he has become a better student. For students right out of high school, Jose says SCC provides a fresh learning experience.

“SCC would be a good option because you get to learn a lot of new things and you able to have a whole new learning experience,” Jose shared.

Jose is known to be a hard worker and now he has to go the extra mile, so that he can transfer to North Carolina State University (NCSU) next fall. He wants to attend NCSU to finish his degree in Animal Science. Jose has truly been working hard and meeting his goals for attending NCSU.

Stephanie Gore, Transfer and Student Success Coach, has noticed his hard work and passion.

“Jose is a driven student and works hard to achieve his goals. As a Transfer Coach, seeing his dedication is inspiring,” said Gore.

SCC has truly been a stepping-stone in Jose Balderas Mendoza’s education. Jose hopes to transfer to NCSU to become a Veterinarian then has the plan of opening his own practice. He hopes that he is always surrounded by animals with his very own farm. After college Jose does not plan on returning to Sampson County, but he will always remember the relationships, experiences, and knowledge he gained while at Sampson Community College.
