[Clinton, N.C.] – With the completion of state and federal reporting, in October 2024, Sampson Community College (SCC) was recognized among the top 5 College & Career Readiness (CCR) programs in North Carolina for the highest number of high-school equivalency (HSE) graduates and post-test rate. SCC also ranked in the top 10 for measurable skill gain (MSG) percentage, coming in 7th statewide for the 2023-2024 school year.

Last year, the College graduated 152 students from its HSE diploma program, only 1 student away from yielding the largest number of graduates in the state. Receiving 2nd behind South Piedmont CC, this is a noteworthy achievement demonstrating both student commitment and program effectiveness.

SCC also earned an 86.5% participant post-test rate among their CCR students, ranking 3rd in NC. In a CCR program, the post-test score percentage generally refers to the number of students who complete an assessment after a designated period of instruction. High post-test rates indicate that students are progressing and achieving educational milestones.

Finishing 7th in NC for MSG percentage, in CCR, MSGs are performance indicators that track a participant’s progress towards employment or a credential, such as completing the five HiSET exams required for graduation. Achieving a high MSG rate is significant, as it indicates that students are meeting crucial educational milestones and that the program effectively supports their academic goals.

Erin Cain, Director of CCR, congratulated, “We are incredibly proud to announce that Sampson Community College’s College and Career Readiness program ranked among the top 5 in North Carolina for both post-test rates and the number of students earning High School Equivalency (HSE) diplomas, as well as securing a top 10 position statewide for Measurable Skill Gains (MSGs).”

“These accomplishments reflect not only the dedication and passion of our instructors and staff but also the hard work and determination of our students. Their commitment to achieving these life-changing educational milestones is truly inspiring, and our team is incredibly proud of every one of them.”

The college currently offers two programs designed for adults who have not completed high school: the Adult High School Diploma (AHS) and High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE).

HSE classes provide students 16 years of age and older who did not finish traditional high school the opportunity to obtain an equivalent credential. These classes prepare students for exams such as the General Educational Development (GED) tests or HiSet exams.

AHS classes offer an alternative pathway for individuals aged 16 and older who were unable to complete their high school education in a traditional setting. This program, collaboratively facilitated by SCC, and the Sampson County Schools & Clinton City Schools Boards of Education, aims to help students earn their high school diploma.
