On Thursday, April 20, Sampson Community College (SCC) held its inaugural Student Art Exhibition in its Learning Resource Center (LRC), showcasing the works of twenty-seven talented students currently enrolled in Spring 2023 studio art courses led by Josiah King, Art Instructor.
Attendees were able to view the creations Drawing I and Painting I students have been completing over the course of the semester in SCC’s new Art Studio, completed in January 2023. For both classes, many of the displays were the product of their final three projects: a self-portrait, a still-life, and a personal project.
King noted that his students have been able to, “…explore color, light, and shape in their artworks, while those in drawing classes have been perfecting their use of line and overall shading to create space and light. They’ve been learning about what it means to make a work of art. The personal project was especially exciting to many of the artists, as they were able to apply what they have learned while incorporating their own interests.”
Hired in Summer of 2022, King has steadily worked to revive the art program at SCC throughout the past year, offering hands-on Drawing I and Painting I for the first time in Spring 2023. As interest continues to grow, King hopes to start a rotation that also includes Drawing II, Painting II, and Art History Survey I & II in the future.
“For many this semester, these art courses have been an intense process of skill development and self-discovery,” King praised. “From learning to capture light and color, to understanding how to “dig deep” to express something about themselves to others, these artists have reached new levels in their art. As their art instructor, I am proud of them, and excited to see them connect to the Arts in valuable and creative ways.”
SCC’s Spring 2023 Student Art Exhibition will remain in the LRC from April 20 – May 1. The artists currently being shown on campus are students:
Art courses at Sampson CC are open to all, including Career and College Promise (CCP) and Sampson Early College High School (SECHS) students. Each art course is transferable as a general education elective.
