Each semester, the Sampson Community College (SCC) Foundation awards various funds through its Mini-Grant program to faculty, staff, and student organizations who plan to enhance the mission of SCC. For the Spring 2023 semester, awards up to $350.00 were gifted to eight employees by the Foundation, ones whose ideas plan to “provide accessible and affordable education, workforce training, and lifelong enrichment” to all students.

Applications are reviewed twice each year with awards being granted prior to the semester in which they will be used. The finalists are judged by the Foundation Appropriations Committee and the SCC Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Lisa Turlington, Dean of Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation, voiced about this year’s recipients, “The Foundation is pleased to be able to support faculty and staff in projects that help promote and build programs and training programs. It is exciting to see the dedication of these program leaders.”

Mini grants for the Spring 2023 semester were awarded to:

  • Chet Bass, Department Chair – Applied Animal Science/Instructor
  • Carla Garcia-Colin, Department Chair – Construction Trades
  • Barney Grady, Division Chair – Construction, Industrial, Agricultural, Public Service & Information Technologies
  • Britt Honeycutt, Department Chair – English & Communications
  • Loreta Jones, Department Chair – Cosmetology/Instructor
  • Luke Matthews, Industrial Technologies Instructor
  • Jacob Miller, Department Chair – HVAC, Refrigeration & Electrical/Instructor
  • Crystal White, Department Chair – Social Sciences & Humanities

The funds were specified to be used by the employees during the Spring 2023 semester to enhance marketing, faculty appreciation, and student educational opportunities at SCC.

In his request, Jacob Miller explained, “My students enrolled in AHR-160 are preparing to take the EPA 608 license. With this license, students can handle and purchase refrigerants. My goal is to see all 13 students achieve a passing grade on all four sections of the EPA Test and obtain a universal certification.”

Similarly, Carla Garcia-Colin noted, “My goal is to purchase more promotional items with our school logo and hand them out at events. We hope to pull in more students to our tables and encourage them to sign up for our courses.”

The goal of the SCC Foundation is to cultivate community support for the College and financially assist students in their educational pursuits at SCC through scholarships. The gifting of funds through faculty and staff mini grants is just another way the Foundation helps change student lives each semester.
