On December 2, 2021, the Sampson Community College (SCC) Foundation received a gift of $30,000 from The Robert P. Holding Foundation, Inc. of Smithfield, NC. The monetary donation was presented to the SCC Foundation by First Citizens Bank to establish a scholarship endowment in honor of Robert P. Holding, the founder of First Citizens Bank.
The purpose of the First Citizens Bank Scholarship Fund is to help deserving students in their educational pursuits at Sampson Community College. To qualify, the student must complete the Sampson Community College Foundation General Scholarship application by April 15 and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The amount of the scholarship shall be determined by the Foundation Executive Director based on donor preferences and in accordance with the Foundation lnvestment and Distribution Policies.
Dr. Bill Starling, President of SCC, expressed his gratitude towards the Robert P. Holding Foundation, Inc. and First Citizens Bank for their generosity and recognition of SCC students’ financial needs. With the donation given, SCC will not only be able to assist students in finishing their degrees but will also be able to provide aid that allows students to strengthen their communities and positively impact their societies through education.
Dr. Starling voiced, “On behalf of the SCC students and families that will benefit from the scholarship opportunities provided by this award, I want to thank representatives of the Holding Foundation and the Holding family who made this gift possible. For those of us from Eastern North Carolina, we know the importance that First Citizens Bank and Trust has and continues to play in the development of our local economy and the dedication to the welfare of the families that live and work within the communities they serve. These funds will allow us to extend their good will and support our students who will help build even more prosperous communities in Eastern North Carolina.”
Lisa Turlington, Dean of Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation, was there to greet and receive the check from Brandon Whitley, SVP/Institutional Consultant of First Citizens Bank, on December 2. She too expressed her vast appreciation towards the Robert P. Holding Foundation and First Citizens Bank.
Turlington voiced, “We appreciate the generous gift from the Robert P. Holding Foundation that will support students who might not otherwise have the chance to attend college. The Holding family and First Citizens Bank have been longtime supporters of education in NC and of underserved communities in our region. Sampson Community College is proud to partner with them.”
