To protect and serve…and educate. The most recent donation to Sampson Community College’s Foundation comes from a place that also exists to support its community. Trooper Steven Naylor of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol paid a visit to the college this week to present a $5,000 to the college for student scholarships.

“What we want to do is partnership with the community,” says Trooper Steven Naylor, “A lot of people are aware of our annual fundraising efforts. These donations we receive, whether through individuals or businesses each year, help to make students in Sampson County move up and reach their goals and dreams.”

The $5,000 donation made to the SCC Foundation by the troopers is awarded to five different students—one from each Sampson County high school–in the amt of $1,000 per student selected. The student can apply the funds to any program of their choosing, but they must attend SCC to receive the funds. This is the 20th year the group has made this donation to students

Lisa Turlington, Dean of Advancement and Director of the SCC Foundation always welcomes the donations. “We appreciate the support this organization has offered the college through the Foundation. Over the years, our local Highway Patrol team has helped 100 students earn an education. The officers and support staff have made a real difference in our community.”

Funds left over after the annual donation to the college go towards other charitable ventures such as the Shop with a Cop program. Last Christmas, troopers were able to take twenty local children shopping for Christmas gifts through the extra money donated by the public.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol’s primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The State Highway Patrol has more than 1,600 troopers who cover 78,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas.
