Sampson Community College continues to create opportunities for students to participate in accredited programs. This week, SCC’s Medical Assisting program received news from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) that it has joined the list.

“This is fabulous news,” said Dr. Veronica Stevens, Division Chair of Health Programs at the college. “We have a team that has been working extremely hard to make this happen and while we were expecting this great news, we did not expect it so early! We are elated!”

Accreditation is important because it helps determine if an institution meets or exceeds minimum standards of quality. This helps students determine acceptable institutions for enrollment and employers often require evidence that applicants have received a degree from an accredited school or program.

SCC’s Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures. Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.

“The CAAHEP is pleased to inform you of its vote to award initial accreditation to the Medical Assisting Diploma program at Sampson Community College, Clinton, NC,” read a letter from CAAHEP President, Dr. Gregory Ferenchak. The letter, addressed to SCC President Dr. Bill Starling, continued, “The commission commends you and your colleagues for your commitment to continuous quality improvement in education, as demonstrated by your participation in program accreditation.”
