A new era at Sampson Community College is officially underway and this week’s events are no different. A long-awaited project to replace the college’s current welding facility with a brand new 10,000 square foot facility is now more than just a plan.
“We have begun the demolition process of the building that currently sits where the new facility will reside,” says Barney Grady, Coordinator of Building and Industrial programs at SCC. “This building had to be removed as it is very outdated and not cost-efficient to renovate. We are excited to see this progress and I can’t wait to see the new facility when it is complete.”
The building being demolished is called the Maintenance Building, or the ‘M’ Building. Over the years, it has housed the Industrial Maintenance, and the Animal Science programs at the college and has also been used for various classes from Art classes to Basic Law Enforcement Training. The new facility came about after the college received a $1.74 million Economic Development Administration grant applied for by Dean of Advancement, Lisa Turlington and SCC President, Dr. Bill Starling.
“This state-of-the-art facility will be among the nicest welding facilities in North Carolina,” says Grady. “We are lucky to have so many welding jobs in this area and we will be able to provide great opportunities for students here as a result. We are moving forward. This college has worked hard to provide top-notch equipment and top-notch facilities!”
SCC’s Welding Technology program has proved popular in the region and provides students with a sound understanding of the science, technology, and application essential for successful employment in the welding and metal industry.
